About the Apprentice Program

The focus for ECE Instructional Apprentices appointed to the Child Development Center is to increase their knowledge of 鈥淏est Practices鈥 for children and to develop through 鈥淗ands-on鈥 practice the competencies of a quality early childhood educator. The knowledge and skills obtained will enhance the opportunities for future employment in the community. The comprehensive training is built on the following topics: responsive relationships with children and families, establishing routines, learning about health/safety practices and acquiring a working knowledge of curriculum planning, specifically the design of the classroom interest areas, large and small group planning, documentation, assessment, and working with families and children with special needs. Supervision and coaching will be provided by the ECE Instructional Specialists. ECE Instructional Specialists (Coaches) model best practices, and provide direct supervision as apprentices implement activities to demonstrate the skills they are developing. All apprentices will meet on a regular weekly basis with the ECE Instructional Specialist for ongoing coaching and team planning in the classroom. Apprentices also meet with the ECE Program Specialist and/or Director for focused trainings outside the classroom prior to and during the semester.
